Mount Pleasant is the largest town in the Charleston area east of the Cooper River, from the Old Village on the harbor out Highway 17 to Park West, Carolina Park and Awendaw, with Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island across the Intracoastal. Mount Pleasant's own trash pickup comes with specific rules. Tree limbs must be cut to four feet or shorter and no more than eight inches thick, stumps are never collected, and leaves and grass go in brown paper yard bags because the landfill will not take yard debris in plastic. Furniture, metal and appliances sit in a separate pile from the yard bags, at the roadside and clear of storm drains, utility boxes and water meters. Debris a contractor creates from construction, demolition, remodeling or landscaping is not the town's to pick up; it is meant to leave with the contractor, and landscape or construction material dropped in a cart gets the whole cart skipped.
